Show Review: As Tall As Lions 12/26 The Crazy Donkey

The Crazy Donkey. The venue is a local club/bar where rarely a band of my interest would come through. Usually pop punk acts march through selling out to 13 year old girls. But every year around Christmas time, As Tall As Lions comes home for their holiday show. The Massapequa natives brought Steel Train and Leah Siegel this time.

The chilly night started off with the doors having three different opening times. Different sites said different times. Doors opened at 6:30. With the cold air blowing on my neck, I couldn’t wait to get into the donkey.

Opening act Leah Siegel took the stage at around 7:30. I wasn’t very familiar with any of her music, but I knew she was from Brooklyn; which usually means someone has talent. She impressed me enough, but I couldn’t find her to purchase her album. She played a set around five songs. At times, she reminded me of Regina Spektor and a Stacy Clark. She also had a stand up bassist performing with her which gave her set a fuller sound. She apologized for not having the full band saying how some of the songs sound empty because of no drums. What I disapproved was how people talked during her set. She drives down to play a special show and people talk and text on their phones. Your at a show, not a school assembly. She left the stage roughly around 8:15.

Steel Train marched onto the stage after Leah. I was very familiar with this band seeing them two weeks early. Their set mostly consisted of their latest record Trampoline. From the first beat, singer Jack Antonoff reminded me of a similar performance. That At The Drive In performance on Conon O’ Brian. They defiantly had the crowd in a positive attitude. Jack was insane. Throwing his guitar and just full out dancing. But again, not many people were there to see them. They played one of my favorites "Firecracker" which was pretty awesome. The set was again pretty short, it ended around 9:30, but if you want to see a band that brings back the Beatles to a modern day Honorary Title, see Steel Train. They won’t upset.

Set List (Not In order):

I feel weird
black eye
kill monsters in the rain
alone on the sea
firecracker
school is for losers

After waiting 30 minutes for Steel Train to take their equipment off the stage, my legs became very tired. Then finally, the lights became dim and the band everyone has been waiting for came on. The band I’ve been wanting to see again for over a year, As Tall As Lions takes the stage. The crowd went pretty insane, being it was a hometown show. They opened up with a little intro into the hidden mysterious track “A Soft Hum.” ATAL set the pace for the night. Then came "A Song For Luna," the self titled track. With Dan Nigro’s beautiful Spanish hymns he says before the chorus, it brought chills right through my body. The band totally turned the stage with bringing an old hit back, "96 Heartbeats." The floor was moving with people swaying back and the crowd chanting “Ohohohohoh,” the venue became a choir. A short break as Dan was switching guitars, they then came out with Breakers, off their new EP “Into The Flood.” Every show I’ve seen them, bassist Julio Tavarez never disappoints. His stage presence is one of the best in the business.

Most of the fans there were mature fans. People in their late teens/early twenties. Even the bands family was there. The show was one of those show where you could get along with everyone there. As Tall As Lions then performed “The Carousel,” where the fans continued to sing the band’s “break through” song on Lafcadio. Dan Nigro’s haunting vocals could put lyrically passage in your mind for days to come. ATAL then played the pounding intro to “Be Here Now” that came through Saen Fitzgerald Orange amp. Then, their debut track from the EP “Into the Flood.” The song tells it self as a relationship is going stale. The lyrics “the steps between us is starting to show, the space between us is starting to grow” could put a tear in any eye. Again, As Tall As Lions didn’t show any weakness to their performance, bring up the dancy track “Ghost of York.” Dan introduced a joke before the song then calling the song “Roast of Pork,” which had the crowd going. Overall, the show was the Christmas present you wished you got, but couldn’t afford.

Dan came out alone, with his friends on trumpet, trombone, and saxophone. He dedicated this next song to his friends and family saying how every Christmas becomes better and better. He performed the Christmas hit “Oh Holy Night.” The brass section really made the song being ATAL usually only has Keyboardist Rob Parr on Trumpet. But they had the recording band on Self Titled, which led into the next song “Stab City.” A crowd favorite for most who I talked to after the show. Most said it was the strongest song of the night.

The brass section was then introduced by Julio and everyone applauded them for their beautiful contributes to the show. The band then performed the soft, quiet “Maybe I’m Just Tired.” The whole floor was quiet when Dan opened his mouth to speak “If love come’s your way, don’t be afraid. Unlock the box you heart’s incased.” The band then proceeded to walk off the stage when everyone started to chant an encore.

After a minute or two, As Tall As Lions returned to the stage with the crowd chanting song titles out. Every member picked up a different instrument and proceeded in playing “505.” Julio sang his passage while Dan contributed harmonies. One of the deepest songs I’ve heard in a long time, and one of my favorites.

I've lost my head to a girl The only one in my world Shining bright in my sky Making sure I ain't cryin' Or layin' down and dying (Now I don't wanna be alone)

As Tall As Lions is known for their “love” in their songs. The band performed their single “Love, Love, Love (Love, Love)” next. The band’s most known/liked song, the crowd was a love fest. The kids with their girl friends were cuddling, and friends were just smiling. This was what many thought they were going to close on. After the piece came to a close, myself and many were chanting out song titles. I chanted Break Blossom, and Dan said “this is our last song.” The band broke out into playing “Break Blossom.” The haunting song brings the tale of ATAL’s friend who committed suicide a few years back. The song is my personal favorite and one of the saddest songs written to date.

The band then again proceeded off the stage. When yet again, the fans chanted “Encore.” As Tall As Lions came out again asking for requests. People chanting older song titles. Dan first teased the crowd with playing the intro to “Dancing In The Rearview.” The final song to the set was “ACROBAT.” It ended the night off very peacefully and you can feel the energy that no one was disappointed.

Throughout the show, I witnessed many new faces. From seeing this band play at local bowling alleys, to now playing in Australia; all it does is put a smile on my face. By far the best show I attended in 2007 and the best band live in the business. As Tall As Lions is not to be overlooked. Get the chance to spare some money for a band that deserves it. Happy Holidays.

As Tall As Lions Set List:

A Soft Hum
A Song For Luna
96 Heartbeats
Breakers
The Carousel
Be Here Now (Extended Intro)
Into The Flood

Andy Hull Reflects 2007

Singer/Songwriter of Atlanta Indie band Manchester Orchestra reflects on 2007. Read it below.

____________________________________________________________________
"i am going to make it through this year... if it kills me"

As we wrap up the last few shows of our tour here in the UK and for the entire year, i am overwhelmed with a sense of fulfillment. when our band looked at 2007 we made ourselves a promise, and that promise was to play 250 shows this year. Oddly looking up now, we have (somehow) done it. I think when we made that challenge to ourselves we had absolutely NO idea how much of a difficult, challenging, growing, and incredible experience it would actually be. We had no idea how many unbelievable people and friends we would meet along the way. How many new brothers and sisters we would meet that we will know until we die. We had no idea how close the friends inside of the band we would become. I am in no way saying we know it all now, but man we have learned allot. I guess the reason i am writing this is for closure's sake. When we saved up every dollar we had and recorded 11 songs in a pretty descent studio (until the money ran out) all the way to our friends basement we had no idea that this kind of thing would happen. I realize we haven't achieved world dominating status and to be honest we are perfectly fine with that. What i do know is that we have achieved more with this record than we ever thought possible, and more people have heard it than we ever thought would. That for me is enough to be proud of for the rest of my life. Oh but none of the glory should shine on our heads... we have so many to thank, so many that showed us the way to be a band, taught us things we never knew. its because of these people that we are able to play music. so for each band that let us share the stage with them this year...bn, kd, cr, mwy, kol, brmc, sa, std, scc, piebald, anathallo, annuals, the never, the new frontiers, and many many more... thank you, we are so thankful for you.

It is also almost all because of another group of people as well... you. everybody from you who have downloaded our record for free to those who helped hang up fliers for our show in your town... it is because of you that we are humbled with our faces on the floor in thanks. you are so kind... more than we ever deserve. thank you thank you thank you. as everybody goes into the holidays my prayer for you is that your time with family, friends, or even just time spent alone is filled with love and joyfulness. 2007 has been an unthinkably incredible year... only one can imagine what 2008 has in store...

see you then. god bless. and merry x-mas.

thanks. andy

Foreverinmotion New Song/News

Brandon Thomas, known as Foreverinmotion; has posted a Christmas song of "Blue Christmas" on myspace. He also has a very sad and important message about fellow friend of mine and his Brian Joyce aka My Morning Radio.

I have a friend in need. Please read.

This is for Brian and Jill.

Brian Joyce is a very close friend of mine. Many of you probably know him best from the band My Morning Radio. On all fronts, he is one of the most caring and compassionate people I've ever known, and deserves the world. About two weeks ago, Brian and his wife, Jill, became adoptive parents of a beautiful baby boy named Milo, whom they brought home two weeks ago. Having known Brian for the last few years and understanding the hardships he and Jill have endured to have a child, I couldn't have been happier for them. Every day we would text back and forth and he'd keep me posted on when the baby was coming; all the details.

Yesterday, the birth mother had a change of heart, and though this shouldn't even be a possibility, she chose to take the baby back and to raise Milo herself. By law, the mother is given 16 days to change her mind before the adoption becomes permanent. A social worker came to the house and forced Brian and Jill to say goodbye to Milo. The pain they feel isn't tangeable to me, and even though I am heart broken for them, I can't possibly fathom how much it must hurt. My thoughts and love are with you both.

If you get a chance, please stop by Brian's music page and leave him and Jill a little love. He has a blog up which explains in detail what happened.

Adelphi Spilt/Message From the Band

Adelphi have broken up. Here's a message from the band.

"Ryan from Adelphi here, letting you know that we have decided that it's time to move on. It has been a long and winding road, and it will continue to be a long and winding road. Some of the best memories of our lives can be found within the time spent as a band together; however, some of the worst can be found there as well. Ups and downs, as always, with love, we have chosen to separate and pursue our individual desires.

Alex has been working full time and will be headed to Parsons in NYC in the spring, and we wish him success. Tom and I have both been attending the local University and working, making our brains tired in an attempt to find out what we want to do with our lives. Matt has been tearing it up at the Apple Store in Towson, so stop by and give him a hug if you’re around. He’s about yay high and has some skin. You can’t miss him. As for all of the music we never had the chance to release, we will be putting it ALL up on our myspace in the near future.

We will be playing our last show on December 30th at the Recher Theatre in Towson, MD. Sadly, Alex will not be joining us, but our friend Dan Book will be filling in. Nicest kid EVAHHH! Tickets will be $5 and are available via paypal on our myspace (www.myspace.com/adelphi). We will gladly mail them to you or meet up with you locally to exchange cash for a ticket. Merch will be on sale, and we’ll also have copies of our first LP as AdelphiRock that we’d like to get rid of… pop punk to the max.

We are also selling our van and trailer, email Alex for details – alexadelphi@gmail.com.

Good news and music cometh: I have decided to start up a project... We are THE EVERLOVE, and I haven't been this excited about writing music in a long, long time. I’m not sure how serious it will get, but it’s going to be an absolute blast. Tom, Matt, and Dan will be joining me and we will have a few other people in from time to time to contribute to our songs. You’ll be hearing us very soon - We have about eleven songs in the works and are hoping to record them by the end of January. We will be playing a few of these songs at that last Adelphi show too.

To those of you who have supported us, thank you. To those of you who have hated us, thank you. To those of you who are thinking: “wtf is Adelphi??”, now you know, and thank you too! To Drive Thru Records, thank you. To everyone who ever came to a show or bought a shirt, let us stay at their houses, or inspired us in any way/shape/form, thank you.

Keep your hearts open,

Ryan, Alex, Matt, & Tom"

RX Bandits Interview

RX Bandits Interview

Before we start the interview, thanks for taking the time to answer a few questions. To start off, who are you and what band do your perform for?

Hello, I'm Steve Choi and I play guitar, and various keyboards in the band.

How did Rx Bandits name originate?

It originated in the lost jungles of Burma.

During the summer, Tenor Saxophone player Steve Borth departed from the band.
Is there going to be a replacement?

We are not currently seeking any replacement. The musical chemistry required to keep the RX's creative machine running is too great to audition or look for a new member. If that person ever does come along, we'll know it.

Are you guys working on any new material?

Yes yes yes. And it rules

Rx Bandits have a unique sense of time signatures. How does Rx create such different ones?

The time signatures we use are only unique to modern-rock-based music.
If you look to international music, odd time signatures are way more
common than standard time signatures, so I don't feel we're really
'creating' time signatures, rather than borrowing them from Latin, and
African music. We use them to create interesting feels, and textures.

What was the best way for RX to advertise them? From the beginning when the band formed?

Hard to say, being that we are a completely different band from when
we were first started, but what has proved to be most beneficial
throughout has been playing live and making records. Sounds obvious I
know, but it unfortunately is not. We place an emphasis on just
focusing on what it is that would even require advertising; the music.

Any plans on a headlining Tour?

Definitely, but we're still working out our schedule for the rest of the year.

Being in the world where every band wants to become the next best thing. Do
you feel that your efforts of making your own genre are not noticed?

Hard to say. We’re trying to destroy the concept of genres rather than
create our own. Genres are in essence created for marketing so we try
and exist as a band in spite of that. All we know is that we get so
much love from our fans and people still come and dance and rock out
at our shows with us...so plenty is going right.

Does RX have any b-sides? Are they going to be released?

Oh we got B-sides. That probably won't be released. But if you search,
you can find them.

As fans know, RX Bandits have a couple side projects. Is they’re going to
be any new recording with Apotheke or Bruce Lee Band?

We’re currently compiling new Apotheke material with different
musicians added. Bruce Lee Band is not actually a side project of RX Bandits.
Mike Park is a close friend of ours and wanted us to play and work on
that release with him, more like a one-time deal. But is not a side
project where we devote the little time we have away from RX to
develop and write for the side projects.

Now moving onto The Sounds of Animals Fighting. Is there going to be anymore
recording? Will there be an East Coast Tour?

There has been talk of recording, but seeing as everyone in the band
is in full time bands, it'll happen when it happens. No more shows planned;
the 4 CA shows were it!

What has been Rx and your biggest influence?

The desire to devote our lives to being musicians, and trying to make
a living doing it.

Those are all the questions I had gathered up. Thanks again for your time.

No problem, thanks very much,

Steve Choi

Ryan Lallier Interview

Ryan Lallier(Ex Waking Ashland/New Atlantic Tour Bassist)

Hey, thanks for taking the time for us here at Headphones Turned On. To start off, could you state your name and what you do?

My name is Ryan Lallier and I write songs and sing them.

Back in 2005, Waking Ashland released “Composure” via Tooth & Nail Records; which was high rated by many people, bringing up comparisons from Mae to Copeland. Why did Waking Ashland decide to drop off of T&N and go with a different approach to Immortal Records?

Tooth & Nail is a Christian record label. We weren't a Christian band despite all the songs about God. We felt more comfortable on a less genre specific Record Label.

Can you describe how you felt being dubbed similar to artists such as Get Up Kids and Mae?

I listen to the Get Up Kids in high school so that makes sense. We toured with Mae while they were supporting their first record. I liked that but I'm not real familiar with anything else they've done.

When performing in WA, you played many shows either headlining or supporting. Could you tell us your best memory and could you tell us why?

We played at alot of different levels. I always enjoyed play smaller club but I have to say playing the Yokohama Arena in Japan for 25,000 people was pretty great.

In April 2007, WA released “The Well.” What grade would you give the album because I’ve read 10 reviews and seen from high 8’s to low 6’s.

Probably a 6 or 7. There are some great moments but I haven't heard it in awhile.

How was it to work in the studio with Chris Shaw(Bob Dylan, Weezer, Wilco).

It was incredible. He is really talented and fun. He had some great stories, like when he played bass on the LL Cool J MTV Unplugged.

What was the real reason WA broke up? Was there any band blood between Jonathan or any other member?

Nice try. I can speak for myself and say that there is no bad blood.

Where do your influences come from?

I really like the Beatles and a guy named Josh Rouse. My family is a huge lyrical influence.

What is your favorite album? And to anyone who hasn’t listened to it, tell us why they should!

I dunno that's pretty hard to say but like that new Wilco record. Nels Cline is probably one of the best guitar players around. That Fray song How To Save A Life is pretty nice too. It's rare that a band on the radio tackles social issues and doesn't make it cheesy.

Now, your going under the name “Ryan Lallier.” Is there any other direction in music you want to explore? What direction would you like to see your new band head in?

Yea, but I'll probably just end up making pop songs. With intersection production. That's what I enjoy most.

How would rate your fans throughout your journey with Waking Ashland?

They're amazing. I love 'em. I still can't believe people bought our records.

What can we expect from you for the remainder of 2007?

I'm going to keep demoing songs and hopefully get a record out before the end of the year.

New bands are starting to break into the music scene. Any advice you could lend to them?

As long as you make music that you're proud of you have success. Waiting around for things to happen isn't too realistic either. Touring is pretty important.

How hard is it for a small band to survive in a era where it seems there are more bands with an equal amount accessibility (the internet, etc) than ever?

Really hard I think. I think there's like 6 million bands on myspace. That's terrifying.

What can you learn from your time in Waking Ashland in your new bands? What will may you differently this time around?

It's really important to be honest. It's especially rare in the music industry. I want to remember to have fun.

Did you feel at all negatively affected by being lumped in with such ambiguous new genres as "piano rock" with other bands such as MAE, Something Corporate, This Day And Age, etc?

Yea, I don't know what they mean. I get that we had pianos in our band but I didn't get it. I guess we kinda sounded like Something Corporate huh?

Is there anything else you would like to address?

Just thanks to all the people who've been writing me on Myspace it's really sweet.

Interview: The Starting Line

I would personally like to thank Kenny and Matt for taking the time to answer some questions. We talked about many things and I would love to hear your thoughts on the interview. I highly suggest checking out
The Starting Line's new release Direction.

Before we start, I would like to thank you for taking time out of your busy schedule to answer some questions. Could you state your name's and the band you play for?

Kenny: Hey, my name is Kenny and I play bass for The Starting Line.

Matt: My name is Matt and I play guitar for The Starting Line.

To start off, Warped tour is all you guys are doing this summer. How do you like the crowd’s reaction to different songs being played?

Kenny: It’s been good. It’s been getting better and better. The longer the Cd’s been out, the more we see the fans just singing along. The kids have been learning the words and it’s been exciting.

Just about a week ago, The Starting Line released Direction. How was it to work with Howard Benson?

Kenny: It was really cool. We got to spend a couple days with him and we were interested. We were held back by the ways he does things a little bit different than other producers. But when meeting with him, and realizing who you know is the best person for the job and who has a different aspect for the record. So, I think we made the best decision with going with him.

Matt: He was just really laid back and really pleasant. Um, I think it was pretty enjoyable for everyone.

Also, I read about TSL recording acoustic tracks for Direction? When can we see a release date?

Kenny: I don’t know. They just made us do that because I really didn’t want to do it. So I have no clue when we’ll be seeing a release date.

The first single off Direction is Island. Why did you guys decide to choose this song?

Kenny: We didn’t really have a choice in it. The label wanted it so we did it.

When I was listening to Direction, I realized in the song "Somebody's Gonna Miss Us" there’s a references to the 2002 release Say It Like You Mean It. What is the message in this song?

Kenny: Just not be scared of progression and or change. Like if something starts and a change doesn’t mean it’s for the bad. You know I think if kids hear something different and they don’t really dig it immediately. So they stop listening to it and just go back to our old music. It’s kind of something we always wanted to explore and I don’t think we are going back to the older style. I’ll let you get the next one Matt (laughs).

Do you guys want to send a shot to the fans? To look at you for what you are doing now not what you were doing back in the Say It Like You Mean It era?

Matt: I’m proud of the fact that none of our records are really not that similar. You know we always have had our sounds and our music has progressed. I personally love bands that progress and I think it’s important to challenge your fans and challenge yourselves not to write the same album again.

Now Kenny, we move to Person L. How is it coming with the EP?

Kenny: Uhm, it’s still in the works eight now. There five songs that I have to finish and some guitar work. It’s just a matter of getting enough time in between touring and finishing it up.

Matt, what can you tell me about The Seventy Six?

Matt: It’s just a pop rock project with a couple of my best friends at home. All it is just having a good time with a couple of friends at home. For right now, we are just taking it slow. It's fun.

Now Kenny, it seems every time I look on an album booklet, I see your name pop up as a guest vocalist. How many more releases in 2007 can we hear your voice on?

Kenny: Well, I’m on the Valencia record and I think that’s it (laughs).

What are The Starting Line's plans after warped tour?

Matt: We are doing a three week regional on the east coast and Midwest tour. Then we are going on a headlining tour in the fall with Paramore and bringing back The Almost.

Kenny, will we ever see your hair as short as it was in the Leavinfg music video?

What A Great Audience- The Performance of a Lifetime

What A Great Audience- The Performance of a Lifetime
Released: August 8, 2007
Unsigned

Every band can agree that the internet is the most successful advertising system in the world. In a matter of minutes, your band could be the next buzz band; or the next hated band. It’s a great way to gain many fans and get a lot of attention. While I was on a journey to find some new music, I passed through many top websites, their forums, recommendations, and many other features. I came across the band What A Great Audience.

Back when I first heard WAGA, they just released some new songs. I decided to give them another listen and I was introduced to The Performance Of A Lifetime. The Performance Of A Lifetime is a five song debut EP from former front man of Driving East, Curtis Marion. The EP opens up with “Why I Sleep On The Floor.” An upbeat, catchy song that gets you automatically attached to the album. Then debuts the powerful, captivating piece called “Take It Slow.” The songs title pretty much tells the story about the song. Vocalist Curtis Marion speaking about taking a relationship slow. Also, at times I hear resemblance to All Time Low. By far, this my favorite song off the EP.

"Tell me something; why don't I just get into my car and go? I’ll be in Richmond faster than you can protest that we've just met. tell me something as we walk down main to cherry baby; am I awake? are we alive? is this really, really real? or is it just a dream?"

“With Friends Like These, Who Needs Bone Cancer?” shows off the superb guitar work from Marion and Poya. Upbeat, sketchy guitar work, and powerful drums. “Post-secret (tell It Well)” delivers what every EP needs. A depressing song. Marion brings in a harsh past and the song is pretty much a shot to whoever it’s directed to. But catchy lyrics will get “your dishonesty is something best served as cold” stuck in your head for a long period of time. The EP is concluded with “Flatline.” In my opinion, it’s the weakest song on the EP. I felt it didn’t mix too well with the rest of the album.

Overall, this is one of the “pop punk” bands that stick out. A different sound than other band out there right now. The Performance Of A Lifetime is a very solid debut EP. Adding the mixture of catchiness, no cheesiness, and solid guitar work… What A Great Audience could win over any fan. With maturing sounds, I’m sure this band will have a great audience for years to come.

The Lives Of Famous Men- Rehearsal

The Lives Of Famous Men
- Rehearsal
Released: July 10th, 2007
Unsigned

Recently, I was reading some comments on word press, when I came across a user who had a blog linked to her comment. That day, I had open ears to listen to anything. Reading interviews, reviews, and everything, I stumbled across an interview with National Product. They recommended listening to a band named The Lives of Famous Men. After first listen, I was immediately hooked to my weakness of catchy/upbeat music. After doing some research, I stumbled across The Lives of Famous Men’s debut EP Rehearsal.

Rehearsal shows how this band blends many different influences into a pop punk band. Or in this case piano/jazz band. Rehearsal opens with “You’re Everyone I Know Right Now.” Setting the tone for Rehearsal, this song mainly speaking about how you can tell who your friends are. “Kid, It’s A Long Way Back To The Port Cities” brings acoustic riffs with soft drum beats to your ears. This song mainly showcases the bands influence in Elvis Costello. Ending Rehearsal is “After Party.” A beautiful blend of piano beats, haunting whispers, and my weakness catchiness.

When I first read that interview, I didn’t have any intention in finding a band from Alaska. Rehearsal is a stellar debut. “After Party” states where this band will be in a few years. “Tonight we’re on the top of the world, and we’re not coming down.”

Lorien- The Ghost in the Parlor EP

Lorien
- The Ghost in the Parlor EP
Unsigned

Not many people still have the heart for pop punk. Mainly due to bands this day and age sounding similar. While scrolling through the interweb, I came across a band from Tennessee. Their name is Lorien. What Lorien offers the listener is a beautiful blend of southern roots with the pop-punk catchiness. I introduce you to The Ghost in the Parlor EP.

When I first listened to the EP, I was immediately hooked in the sounds. Beautiful guitar work showing how they blend their roots. The seconds song “You Got Me Down” shows where the catchiness comes. At times, I think I’m listening to a much harder As Tall As Lions or a Gatsby’s American Dream. But, it’s a band that blends both sounds into the ultimate band. Vocalist Kaleb Jones nailing those words “You Got Me” in your head for weeks. The band quickly slows it down to two slow moving songs. A blend of haunting vocals from Jones with beautiful keys added by Cara Pollack. The next song “Singing Isn’t Music,” reminds you if you were trapped in England back in the 1700’s. Imagine your at the ball and your gonna dance with the queen, you will hear this song.

With bands pushing in the scene to become the next big hit, Lorien doesn’t have to rush. It will come sooner or later when a label realizes why beautiful music like this is not signed. This bands future is endless. There are so many ears this EP can capture and hold onto. The Ghost in the Parlor is not only a debut ep, it is great.

The Dangerous Summer- If You Could Only Keep Me Alive

The Dangerous Summer
- If You Could Only Keep Me Alive
Hopeless Records

Some bands today offer many different styles of music. Various genres are shining light but for now, the summer of 2007 is a pop punk summer. Adding to this, Hopeless records latest snag The Dangerous Summer give you If You Could Only Keep Me Alive.

To the listener, your wondering if this is just another pop band. If You Could Only Keep Me Alive brings another band from the Maryland that has produced talents from All Time Low to many others, The Dangerous Summer live up the name. Even All Time Low vocalist Alex Gaskarth makes an appearance on the track "Disconnect." Vocalist AJ Perdomo belting out how a girl and a boy are floating away slowly. Besides catchy vocals, this EP also offers crafty guitar work. Throughout the ep, there isn’t one dull moment lacking upbeat riffs and catchy lines that will be stuck in your head for days. However, If You Could Only Keep Me Alive only has three new songs on it. The other five are previously from The Dangerous Summer’s There Is No Such Thing As Science.

But to anyone looking for a band similar to a catchy Third Eye Blind, All Time Low, or The Starting Line.. Listen to The Dangerous Summer. If You Could Only Keep Me Alive reminds me a lot of Cartel’s Ransom EP. Not only the catchiness, but how many times I’ve played this and haven’t got board. Now if these four high school kids don't impress you, just give up on pop punk.

Score: 8.5

Anyone who views this, I'll be using this blog for now..

more updates soon.

The Exit Radio- Alive at Sunrise

The Exit Radio- Alive at Sunrise
Released: September 11, 2007
Label: 111 Records

To many people, the name The Exit Radio may not sound familiar. Its because 111 Records band Mashlin has changed their name and has brought forward to us Alive at Sunrise. Throughout The Exit Radio's profession, they released an highly debut LP Pushing Through The Seasons that got many people excited to hear what would come next. After two years of label trouble, they give you the free EP Alive at Sunrise.

This four piece act first brings to the table the aggressive opening track "Faster". A very upbeat catchy song that vents out the troubles they have faced in the past years. The song sums up how fast the EP really is. "Until I Stood No More" starts off with a jazzy vocal rhythm when vocalist Aaron Harvey tricks us and brings back some aggression with the line "all hell, we're gonna die." "Elizabeth" is a love letter back and forth from Aaron's words. Harvey just keeps telling this girl how badly he misses her and how everything will be alright. Hinting "my tired throat has sang its final song" it looks like Elizabeth will be seen. The last two tracks of this recording "Life Is Just A Second" and "Fate Is A Killing Machine" just sum up the rest of the ep with catchy upbeat rock.

Overall, I've been waiting for new sound from The Exit Radio aka Mashlin. From an LP that had many moods and different feelings in each song to a very upbeat faster EP. From what I heard, I am becoming very excited for The Exit Radio's LP in 2007*. For now, let your ears feast on Alive at Sunrise.

Every Avenue - Ah!

Every Avenue
- Ah!
Record Label: Fearless Records
Release Date: August 14, 2007

So far in 2007 there have been many band break ups, with notable front runners in the pop punk genre including The Early November and Spitalfield going down. It has also been the up rise of the new batch of pop punk bands such as The Dangerous Summer, All Time Low, Four Year Strong and many more. Sometime in June, Fearless Records announced one of those young gun pop punk bands, Every Avenue.

Forming in 2003, Every Avenue have been gaining more and more fans with their “happy” pop punk. Even drummer Michael Govaere says, “We try to stay fun and energetic. We don’t scream or do cliché hardcore breakdowns like so many other bands.” With that statement, Every Avenue offers you Ah!

Before Every Avenue signed to Fearless, they announced they were recording their album with Broken English Record’s producer John Naclerio. With them picking Naclerio, by instinct I knew this was going to be a great release. Ah! opens with “One More Song,” an upbeat, captivating song. While this EP is claimed “fun and energetic” it still brings back depressing memories for Strauchman. The single “Where Were You” is a story about a girl David dated, but nothing happened. Though it seems sad, Dave then hints about how the girl came “Back to where we left off,” showing how Every Avenue turns positive with a small negative. Every Avenue even mixes some synth in “Nothing” that resembles Take This To Your Grave-era Fall Out Boy. Every Avenue also dishes out tracks The Ataris would have made back in the So Long, Astoria days. My favorite track off Ah!, “Picking Up the Pieces,” is all about exploding guitars, standout vocals, and overall fun; this song is made to be stuck in your head.

We could strike this fire down / But leave the sparks between us / And when the flames came pouring out / You didn’t find us / We were standing all around picking up the pieces

“Think of You Later (Empty Room)” illustrates a song found in the next National Lampoon movie when someone fantasies about a girl. “Think of you later in my empty room.” Anyone can somehow relate to that line. Closing Ah! is “Getting Out.” Again bringing memories of Fall Out Boy, Every Avenue continues to push with the upbeat pop punk.

There isn’t much negative I can say about this EP, except the similarities in songs. While the EP doesn’t have a dull moment, there’s no song where Every Avenue decides to slow the tempo down. But, Every Avenue states a strong point about being a fun, energetic pop punk band. If Ah! was a full length instead of an EP, this would defiantly top many pop punk bands releases. Not only is this my favorite EP this year, it’s one of the catchiest albums I have ever heard – even as catchy as The Starting Line’s Say It Like You Mean It.

Making April- Runaway World EP

Making April- Runaway World EP
Released: May 30, 2007
Unsigned

What’s the definition for the next big thing? According to dictionary.com, there are no dictionary entries for the next big thing. There is no way to define the next big thing but people do have there ways to say a band is going to be “the next big thing.” For a band to be successful, you need good management, good booking agent, supportive legal, and most of all a great fan base. Making April has every thing that was stated. This band hailing from Cortlandt Manor in New York, racking in 20,000 plays a day and approaching 100,000 friends on myspace; you would call this band an internet band. But there debut re-release “Runaway World EP” demonstrates what goods this band will perform live for you.

Runaway World has many moods and movements it offers to the piano rock ear. In every teen movie, there’s a love scene. “These Are The Nights” is the song that would be in the background sound. With vocals fluttering with words of remember nights and such, it’s a great way to open an album up. “I Wrote This Song” is a prime example of how the album has many different moods and movements. Coming from a soft opener, it goes straight into a pop piano upbeat piece. The EP continues with its upbeatness with “Driveway.” What’s impressive about vocalist Sean ___ is how is voice has many ranges. This song is compiled with acoustic guitar riffs mixed with some electric. A soft upper register of piano makes the song easily a radio hit.

After coming from two upbeat songs, the tides turn into the depressing stage. “All Of Yours” is a typical song you could find on MTV’s Laguna Beach. Like Stephen and Kristen, things don’t work out in this piece. Sean states how he doesn’t want his girlfriend to say “we became too late well I just think you're humoring yourself let me say one more thing before you fly.” He’s wants to try it again, but he knows it won’t work out in the end. “Chase You Down” is pretty self explanatory. The character wants to chase her down, to get her. The next two pieces flirt with your ears. Starting off with soft piano the moods change somewhere in the middle of the song. “Jump In” brings in how important friends are. They are always going to be there for you. He doesn’t want to bother so he just says “and tell me when this gets better but don't be alarmed if I'm not here when you figure it out just call, I'll throw you a line.” He wants to give space. The EP is closed with three pieces. “Hurry Up And Wait” bringing in violins and some more acoustic guitar, stating how they want to escape there troubles and “haunting.” The EP is closed with the name of the EP, Runaway World (Acoustic). Stating how a girl can’t find commitment, Making April brings comparisons from The Fray mixed with Mae. She doesn’t want to hurt the person because of fear.

“Here's my heart for you” is what this whole EP is based on. Making April now brings you an album you wish Mae would make. It fills every emotion as well as every mood you can feel in life, except anger. Now back to the opening paragraph, what is the definition of “the next big thing?” Making April may have just given me a clear meaning with Runaway World.

Travis Bryant Interview

Interview with Travis Bryant of Goodbye Tomorrow

Before we start this interview, could you please state your name and what band you perform for?

*Yo soy Travis. Yo canto. (I am Travis Bryant and I sing.)

When Terminal broke up and you were added to replace Matthew Gilbert of Goodbye Tomorrow, How did the Goodbye Tomorrow find you? What were your feelings going into this band? What were your expectations going into this band? Did you think that you were ever going to be in a band again?

*I received an email from a band member insisting that we talk when terminal played phoenix. All four of the guys came out and we discussed. I wasn’t really interested in the possibility of singing with them until they showed me their new instrumental material. It was breathtaking. I knew I would be playing with a solid band eventually but hadn’t any idea it would be one of this caliber. After meeting the guys and hearing the music, I was fairly desperate to be a part of the band.

When the self-titled Goodbye Tomorrow EP came out, what did you think of it? How did you feel about the fans reaction? What was your favorite track of the EP and why? Any songs left off it?

*I was more proud of those three songs than I had been of anything I’d done previously. People have made very nice comments in regards to the songs and the impact they are making, as well as the band’s progression. My personal favorite is probably Vespertine due to the personal nature of the lyrics and vibe.

In the song “A Verpertine Haunting”. Can you explain what the lyric “ I’ll share your ghost tonight?”

*No, not really.

Goodbye Tomorrow is recording. Can you tell us who is producing the album? How many tracks are on it? Any title? When can we expect it to hit shelves?

*Tracking for the record is now completed. Mark Trombino produced the twelve tracks. As of now, we are expecting eleven on the album. Song and album titles, as well as a release date, are very tentative at the moment so I must unfortunately leave you in the dark.

Will there be a re-release of “Tied By Miles”?

*Negative. That was a different band. We play our songs.

What were your emotions to getting signed to Equal Vision Records? Do you like EV more than Tooth & Nail? Is Equal Vision the right place?

*Elated. Working with Equal vision has been an unbelievably pleasant experience. I am infinitely happier with the label’s support and enthusiasm regarding Goodbye Tomorrow. Best indie label around.

Why did Terminal depart? Were there any conflicts inside of the band?

*We started off as five close friends and all grew irreparably apart on the road. It was an extremely dysfunctional and an impossible environment for each member’s happiness.

Do you still keep in contact with the guys in Terminal? Do you support all the bands they are in?

*I talk to James. He was a great friend to me and I will always love him; Matt too, on occasion. I will always support them in their pursuit of happiness; whether it be quitting terminal, starting a metal band, or building a spaceship.

What is your most personal song you made? What does it mean to you?

*I have written a few songs in Phoenix that lack proper recordings, “weep” and “Missouri”. They are both contenders. One is for the world. One is for my mother.

What made you want to change from being in a “harder” genre in Letter Twelve to a mellower genre in the same band except being called Terminal?

*We were all maturing as musicians and I especially as a songwriter. I will speak for myself in saying that I wanted to write good rock music that I enjoyed listening to, having grown out of the genre that possessed Letter Twelve. Plus, the name was stupid to look at.

While in Terminal, you guys were strongly compared to “Recover”. How did it feel to be called a “Recover “ cover band? What were your biggest influences? Are there any B-sides around off of “How The Lonely Keep”?

*Recover was the best band playing in that scene, and a huge influence to all of Terminal’s members. I would much rather be considered a “recover cover band” than a Taking Back Sunday or Thursday cover band like all of that other garbage. I have and will always be heavily influenced by Counting Crows too. Glassjaw was another serious factor. The other guys would likely say the same. I wrote a few extra songs with the bunch for HTLK. They are on my computer at home and that is where I intend them to stay.

Now going to your solo project. What made you want to start this? Why didn’t you keep the solo act going? Can we expect new songs soon or an album?

*I was writing a significant amount of music that didn’t fit with Terminal’s sound. I have a ton of beautiful and sad songs that are yet to surface. My sanity is very contingent on writing music, thus keeping it a very consistent part of my life. I have sincere intentions to release a solo album once Goodbye Tomorrow is more established. A vinyl release is my dream.

What was your most memorable moment with any band?

*Having sadly underdeveloped relationships with all of the wonderful people I meet.

What album are you anticipating the most in 2007?

*If Counting Crows hammer it out, they are my obvious choice. The gods aside, radiohead or terminal.

What’s next for Goodbye Tomorrow after this tour with Pierce The Veil? Can we expect a full U.S tour? And with who?

*We are beyond excited to do some dates with our brothers in Brighten and This Providence. It’s sure to be a love fest.

Well, that is all I have to ask. Would you like to say any last words before letting you go?

*I would like to make known that I am grateful for every ear my voice and words have resonated within. Your inquiries have exhausted my head and now I must repair, Kyle.

Thanks a lot Travis,

Kaddisfly Interview

Kaddisfly Interview with Chris Ruff and Kelcey

SWH: Can you state your name and role you perform in the band?

Yeah sure. Christopher Ruff, and I sing for a band named Kaddisfly.

SWH: Where did the name of the band "Kaddisfly" originate?

A Kaddisfly is actually an insect from the northwest and its one of those little dudes that can walk on water. There mostly used for dry fishing. It’s mostly just from where the region we are from.

SWH: What were your thoughts about the newer release of "Set Sail The Prairie?" Any b-sides available?

We are really happy with the way it came out. It has actually been done for a year now. It was postponed because we just wanted some more time to take with the band and the performance. March was a good time to release it. Yes there are two b-sides available. One that is on the Four Seasons EP we release. Also, one called "Flowers" which will be released soon.

SWH: What have been your biggest influences?

Dude, just life in itself really. I'm thinking that one band we are all inspired by is probably Tears For Fears. But other than that, we love so many bands so it’s all over the board. Pop, Rock, Indie, and everything.

SWH: How did it feel to be on Take Action Tour

Ahh it’s awesome! It's been so awesome to see how many people come out and see the shows. Means so much to us.

SWH: Also, I read an article on Revolution on Canvas 2. What did you contribute towards it?

Well, we were approached by them I had some extra writings and lyrics so I decided to donate some of it. It’s going to be sick.

SWH: What’s happening now after the Take Action Tour?

We might be playing a couple shows here and there. But we are playing the second part of Warped Tour this year. Can't Wait!

Interview with Chris and Kelsey of Kaddisfly

SWH: Do you guys support downloading music? What are your feelings on the matter in general?

(Chris)
I can’t say that I have a strong opinion on the issue. For smaller bands downloading is a great way to spread the music and start a word of mouth buzz. For the overall industry I’m not sure. Personally there’s nothing I can do about it and I don’t really care all that much. If fans really like a band they will buy the record.

SWH: Did Kaddisfly bring a different approach to “Set Sail The Prairie” than with previous releases?

(Chris)
Set Sail the Prairie is a more mature record overall. We put more thought and physical time into this album than any of our previous releases. We had a concise vision going into the recording process and I believe that we we’re able to accomplish what we set out to do.

SWH: Personally, what’s your favorite song off of album?

(Chris)
I might have to say “Via Rail.” In my opinion it is one of the best songs we’ve written.

SWH: Is Kaddisfly still writing while on the road?

Constantly.

SWH: What inspires Kaddisfly for this particular quote: "Write. Influence. Change. Live. "?

(Kelsey)
It’s kind of out mission statement; what we want to achieve through playing music and living our lives. I just hope we can make a positive impact on people.

SWH: What inspires Chris and his writing style (lyrically, musically)?

(Kelsey)
I heard that some guy calls him once a month and he just starts writing. That’s the word on the street….

SWH: What was it like working with Kris Crummett?

(Kelsey)
It was like having your cake and eating it to. He has a great ear and great ideas and is a maestro on the drums. It was great to work with someone you could totally relate to musically and personally. And he really likes hot sauce…

SWH: How has Sub City/Hopeless treated you?

(Kelsey)
I feel like overall, we have been a challenge to them, but it has worked out wonderfully. It’s pretty obvious that we are a different kind of band then those they generally work with. They have been nothing but supportive in all the decisions that we make, musically and otherwise. We’re also on the same wavelength as far helping people through charity and such.

SWH: Now 5% of the profits of “Set Sail The Prairie” go towards the Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation. What does the donation entail?

(Kelsey)
It goes to helping the music programs in local Portland schools. Music was a huge part of my life through school, and to see it dwindling away is really disheartening. We just want to give back whatever we can and hopefully, kids will find the beauty in music.

Oh, The Story!- Good Morning Illumination

Oh, The Story- Good Morning Illumination

Release Date: May 25, 2007
Record Label: Unsigned

As everyone knows, Absolutepunk.net posts news, reviews, interviews, and everything else. While I was recently reading a review on The Late Night- I Said Goddamn(great album and great review), I stumbled in a conversation between Townson becoming the next Chicago with bands like All Time Low, The Dangerous Summer, The Apathy Eulogy. While reading many posts, listening to at least 10 myspace pages; I came across a band called Oh, The Story!

While listening to there myspace and purevolume pages, I was instantly liking what I heard. Then I came across the Our Mailbox June 18 (Week Prior) and saw that Oh, The Story's debut release Good Morning Illumination. An unsigned act like this wasn't getting much push for a review from the Our Mailbox post. So, after many obstacles and talks I finally got my ears on Oh, The Story- Good Morning Illumination.

This six piece band, instantly had me hooked from beginning to end. Like many records the album starts off with an intro, in this case "The Overture." Just a mix of acoustics and some catchy techno keys that lead into the song " I Am", where in this song is where vocalist James Larson belts out sounds "let me catch my breath, I let my heart out run my head." That line is worth getting stuck in your head for a good week. "Come Hell Or High Water" keeps your ears locked and loaded to the stereo or headphones. With talking of demons and sinners, it sounds like a Fall of Troy song. The song "Sin, Repent, Repeat" is one song that sticks out more than all the others. Through this song, and many others; James Larson reminds me of a Corey Warning of The Graduate. The next couple pieces, contain a softer side of Oh, The Story! With the noise in "Room and Board", it is an instant go to sleep song. Not a boring song, just a simply, deep hearted, piano cliche with very soft melodically vocals. The rest of the album has many highs, and hardly any lows. Ending this album, "It's Not An Ending At All..." starts off with some slow piano and acoustic. This song talks about how this man misses his girlfriend, who seems to be cheating on him. After that, the emotions get deeper as there are violins and chorus sing along to "Oh my love tonight your living and listening, your sleeping with another and your wishing it was me" and with James spurting out "I'm Coming Home" to end this stellar album.

Overall, I had such a high anticipation for this album after hearing what I heard on the internet. Good Morning Illumination did not disappoint me at all. With sounds ranging from The Graduate, Morning for The Masses, and The Audition. Maybe AP user evilandgood was right, about Townson(Maryland) turning into the Chicago. Oh, The Story! has a full world of potential. With the talents this kids hold, its no doubt I cannot wait for another release. Just sit back one day and give this a listen. This record isn't a push to the side album like many pop-punk releases this year. For me to you, this is one album you have to listen to.

Rosematter- The Fiscal Year

The Fiscal Year- Rosematter

Pennsylvania's based band "Rosematter". Consisting with 5 members, this band is not afraid to break into the music scene. For many years, bands with female vocalist weren't given enough credit for what they are. With bands such as Paramore and Flyleaf, Rosematter singer Katie Kolos fits perfectly. Rosematter’s debut "The Fiscal Year" made a big impression on what this bands potential can be. It caught the attention of Lobster Records who have produced such sound as Park, Lorene Drive, and many more.

The Fiscal Year brings about how hard and how soft Rosematter can be. While Katie is lead, Lucas Corish adds background vocals in many songs. The song "Loosely Translated, it Means You're a Lunchbox" is an example of why Rosematter is being compared to Fall Out Boy and Blink 182. Even with female vocals, you can hear shades of bands that have made their marks on music. Most know in "The Blackest Snow Falls on London", this songs is the most personal in my opinion. With its soft acoustic melody’s and vocals, it can grab the heart of anyone. One song that sticks out is "The Legend of Gene Wilder." "The meaning is lost in the context, overflowing with fabrications." its sure to be stuck in your heads with catchy guitar riffs and such.

We can all say we know what bands are going to be the "future." With bands such as All Time Low, Paramore, and more putting there name in music you can soon expect to see Rosematter's name there. Only down side to this album is the length of the album. While having 12 songs on the CD, songs range from 3:30 to 4:00. It can be a hard CD to listen to all the way through, but if you do you won't regret it. Don't get me wrong, this will make a solid foundation for the band to grow on; give this album a chance if you want to hear a female vocalist equivalent of Fall Out Boy. So now, you can introduce your selves to the next Fall Out Boy meets Paramore.

Grade: 73%

Rosematter is...

Katie Kolos - Lead Vocals
Terry Gildow - Bass
Matt Bozievich - Guitar
Lucas Corish - Guitar/Back-up Vocals
Kevin Shoop - Drums

The Consequence- By The Bedside EP

The Consequence- By The Bedside EP
Release Date: December 8, 2006
Label: Unsigned

For all 15 year old boys, our music taste changes practically every season. For Winter, me listening to Rocky Votolato and Elliott Smith to when Spring sprung listening to Rufus Wainwright and slowly mixing some Sherwood into the mix. Now with summer, I'll like for you to feast your ears on a 4 piece suit from Roseland, New Jersey called The Consequence. With there debut By The Bedside EP, they are slowly rebuilding the Jersey scene.

To break out that this band isn't a fluke, they open the ep with "Break Out." When you first listen to this song, to me I thought of a Christmas song. A mix of organs with catchy guitar riffs while vocalist JP talks about naughty things he would like to do. "Lush" is a mix of catchy piano and lushicious finger snaps. Again, if you want to have your friends dance at your party; this song is a must.

Throughout the first two tracks, I knew I was going to love this ep. "Fairweather Friend" automatically reminded me of a song I have heard before. It reminded me of a b-side from (+44)'s When Your Heart Stops Beating. Its as if a younger Mark Hoppus is singing this. The next two tracks "Tast Of Autumn" and "Sandcastles" pretty much sum up the rest of the ep. Good, upbeat, catchy piano rock.

By The Bedside is a good debut ep. There are times when its gets a little boring. But maybe its the time of the year. All I know come July, this ep will be playing on my Ipod, cd player, on the beach or where ever you have one. As JP speaks in the track "Sandcastles"; "the best surrounds you." You being The Consequence.

For Fans of: Cartel, Quietdrive, another pop band, and a lot of milk shakes.
